That is not a detail: a 24V starter and its 12V counterpart often look almost identical, yet they are not interchangeable. Run a 12V starter on 24 volts and it draws twice the current and burns out. So always check the type plate on your old starter, or the battery setup of your machine, before you order.
Besides voltage, the number of teeth on the pinion, the output in kW and the mounting determine whether a starter fits. 24V versions generally deliver more power, up to well over 9 kW in this range, because they have to turn over larger diesel engines. Every item lists its full dimensions.
A gear reduction starter has a gearbox between the electric motor and the pinion. It delivers the same torque in a smaller housing while drawing less current, which counts double on heavy engines. If the dimensions match, it will replace a direct-drive starter without trouble.
