For a full engine overhaul there are main bearings, connecting rod bearings and thrust bearings, the cylinder head gasket set, a single head gasket and the crankcase gasket set. Rocker arms, O-rings and nuts cover the top end, and a water pump takes care of cooling. Never pull the head down in one go. Tighten the bolts in several stages in a crosswise pattern from the centre outwards, and check them again once the engine has been warmed up. After fitting new rocker arms, reset the valve clearances.
A word of warning about bearings: the main and big end shells here are standard size. If the crankshaft has been reground at some point, it needs undersize shells and standard ones will not fit. Measure the journals with a micrometer or look for a size stamped on the crank web before you order, and check the running clearance with Plastigauge after assembly.
Brake linings, brake shoes and the hand brake spring get the brakes working properly again. While the linings are off, inspect the drums. Deep scoring means new linings take a long time to bed in and brake well. Hook the springs back into the same holes as before, and replace any spring that has stretched or whose coils no longer sit tight together.
A restoration is also about looks. Left and right fenders differ, so check which side you need. New fenders give this Hanomag a clean outline again when the old ones have rusted through. Treat the inside with a rust protective coating before fitting, since that is where the mud thrown up by the tyres will collect.
On a tractor this age the type plate can be hard to read. Clean it gently with a soft brush and soapy water until Perfekt 401 E is legible again. Bearings and gaskets often carry a stamped number or size, which you can compare with the details shown with the item. That matters with bearings in particular, where standard and undersize look almost identical.
