A star slip clutch consists of spring-loaded friction discs that begin to slip at a preset torque level. Instead of overloading the PTO or gearbox, the clutch absorbs the tension. The drive continues to run, but the overload is handled without causing damage.
This type of clutch is especially useful with implements that may suddenly block, such as from stones in the soil or a seized rotor. A star slip clutch prevents this shock from transferring through the rest of the driveline.
Always choose a PTO shaft that matches your machine and implement in length, profile and required power. The clutch should be matched to the horsepower at 540 or 1000 RPM. Maintenance is also key: keep the clutch clean and regularly check if the slip setting is still correct.
Avoid over-greasing the clutch itself. The rest of the PTO shaft – like the sliding tubes and cross joints – should be lubricated regularly.
