When replacing the water pump, always fit it with a new gasket on a clean, flat face, and skip any extra sealant that could break loose inside the cooling system. Turn the new pump by hand before fitting the belt, check the belt for cracks and set the correct tension. Moisture at the small weep hole at the bottom of the pump housing is usually the first sign that the shaft seal of the old pump is going.

For an aircon compressor, check the number of pulley grooves and the line connections. If the old compressor seized, flush the system and renew the receiver drier before fitting the new one.
