Before ordering bearings for a Renault 77-12, measure the crankshaft journals and look at the back of the old shells. If an oversize is marked there, the crank has been ground before and standard bearings will not suit. Always fit new connecting rod bolts during a rebuild. They are tightened close to their yield point, and a reused bolt can snap. The result inside a running engine is usually terminal for the block.
V-belts and radiator hoses look after the cooling. A belt that squeals when you open the throttle is often slack or glazed. A new belt stretches slightly at first, so check the tension again after a few hours of work. Gas struts for the rear window, a headlight and connection cables complete the page.
New inlet and outlet valves should be lapped into their seats with grinding paste. A trace of marking blue then shows whether the contact face runs evenly all the way round. Set the valve clearance after assembly and check it again after the first hours of running, as a valve with too little clearance will not close fully and can burn.
Black smoke and hard starting often trace back to a poor spray pattern at the injection nozzles. If in doubt, replace the full set so that every cylinder works evenly again. Radiator hoses that feel soft or show cracks at the ends deserve the same attention before they split on a hot day.
