An Ares 540 tends to work on every side at once, with an implement on the PTO, a trailer on the flange hitch and a driver climbing in and out of the cab all day. At the rear there is an automatic flange hitch, automatic drawbars, a top drawbar and a PTO shaft end piece. The end piece is what the driveshaft slides onto. Once its splines are worn round or damaged by an implement pushed on at an angle, the shaft no longer slides on cleanly and the locking collar does not catch properly. Before ordering a new one, check the number of splines and the speed the PTO runs at, since more than one version exists.
A note on the air filter: never knock an element clean against a tyre. The paper tears and dust goes straight into the engine. If anything, blow it out from the inside with low pressure, and replace it as soon as it is damp or damaged or the service indicator asks for it. Wipe the inside of the filter housing before the new element goes in.
Renault released the Ares in a string of models with numbers close together, so confirm on the type plate that you have a 540. For door locks, mirror brackets and glass the side matters as well. The old part often carries a maker's number that you can check against the product details, and on a filter it is usually printed clearly on the rim.
