The Fendt Farmer 309 is the top model of the classic Farmer 300 series and was produced from 1981 until the early 2000s. During that period it went through several generations and variants: the 309 LS (two-wheel drive), 309 LSA (four-wheel drive), and later the more compact 309 C and 309 Ci. Depending on the year of manufacture and variant, power ranges from 86 hp on the earliest models to 112 hp on the final Ci version. That makes comparing specs by generation important when looking for a specific machine or parts for it.
The 309 LS and 309 LSA from the eighties ran on an MWM TD 226-4.2 four-cylinder turbodiesel, later replaced by the TD 226-B4. This water-cooled 4.2-litre engine produced 63.1 kW (86 hp) at 2,350 rpm with a torque of 311 Nm at 1,600 rpm in the first generation (1981). By the third generation (1989) power had risen to 66 kW (90 hp) and later even to 68 kW (92 hp), with torque increasing to 378 Nm at 1,500 rpm. The final LSA generation delivered 70 kW (95 hp) at 2,300 rpm and 378 Nm. The oil change interval was set at 500 operating hours.
The 309 C from 1997 was a significant step forward: Fendt switched to a Deutz three-cylinder engine of 3,192 cc producing 105 hp at 2,400 rpm, with a torque increase of 35% over the previous generation. The 309 C from 2001–2003 used an updated Deutz four-cylinder engine of 3.2 litres with turbo and intercooler delivering 100 hp. The 309 Ci (from late 2003) got a new Deutz BF4M2012C of 4,040 cc producing 112 hp at 2,300 rpm and a torque of 474 Nm at 1,500 rpm, with intercooling.
On the LS and LSA generations the standard transmission was a 21+6 gearbox with electro-hydraulic reverse shuttle (EHS). A 21+21 version was available as an option. Maximum travel speed was 40 km/h forward and 35 km/h in reverse. A super creep gear with 9 additional creep ratios within a 21/6 gearbox was available as an option. On the Ci the standard gearbox was a 21+6, with an optional 21+21 version and a rear lift capacity of just under 5,000 kg.
The hydraulic system of the 309 LSA used a tandem pump combination delivering 70 litres per minute at 180 bar. Lift capacity on the three-cylinder versions was a maximum of 4,420 kp. On the Ci this increased to around 4,980 kg. The electronically controlled rear linkage (EHR) was standard on the later versions.

A front PTO was also available as an option, running at 1,000 rpm at an engine speed of 2,033 rpm. The PTO is operated electro-hydraulically and can also be controlled remotely from the rear mudguard.
On the 309 C/Ci the standard tyres are 440/65 R24 front and 540/65 R34 rear. On the LSA variants this differs; machines with 14.9R24 front and 600/65R34 rear are also found on the market.
The cab of the 309 (particularly the C generation) had a noise level of 72 dB. On the Ci this was 75 dB. The cab was redesigned with improved ventilation and easier access. A suspension seat was standard. The 309 LSA was optionally available with a passenger seat, front and rear work lights, air conditioning and a radio.
