The Ford 3055 belongs to the Ford Industrial range, tractors made to graft, often with a loader on the front or working around a contractor yard. The clutch takes the brunt of that work, with constant gear changes and pulling away under load. For the clutch there are clutch plates, single clutch cover assemblies and thrust bearings. If the tractor is already split, replace the plate, cover and thrust bearing together. The thrust bearing is the smallest item on the job and the first to start whining if the old one stays in. Check the flywheel for scoring and heat spots, count the splines on the input shaft and compare them with the hub of the plate, and reset the pedal play once it is back together. A clutch pedal with no play at all wears out the thrust bearing very quickly.
While you are in there, look at the rear crankshaft seal as well. If it weeps, oil reaches the new clutch plate and it will slip no matter how carefully everything else was fitted. With the tractor already split, changing the seal adds very little time to the job, so do it at the same time.
Always use new connecting rod bolts and nuts on a rebuild. They are tightened close to their limit, and a bolt that has already stretched once can fail in service. Tighten them in stages to the figure specified for the engine.
Gear wheels are available for the transmission. When you replace one, inspect its mating gear and the bearings as well, because a worn partner will soon make a new gear noisy again.
On a tractor that has been through a few owners, it always pays to check the type plate and compare the reference number on the old part. With clutch plates, also count the splines and measure the hub, since two plates with the same outside size can have different splines. With the water pump, include the gasket in the comparison.
