Looking for parts for your Fendt Farmer 308 (Typ 178) tractor? In this category, you'll find everything you need for the maintenance and repair of your vehicle.
The Fendt Farmer 308 with type designation Typ 178 covers the 308 LS and 308 LSA from the Farmer 300 series, built from 1980 to 2000. The "LS" indicates a higher specification level, while the "A" in LSA refers to all-wheel drive. The Typ 178 is therefore the LS/LSA line of the Farmer 308, distinct from the later compact C line (Typ 118). Over the twenty years of production, several revisions were carried out, gradually improving both power output and transmission.
Power comes from an MWM D 226.4.2, a water-cooled four-stroke four-cylinder inline engine with direct injection, overhead valves, pressure lubrication, inline injection pump (Bosch PES 4 A 80 D 320/3 RS 1301), multi-hole injector nozzles, centrifugal governor and dry cylinder liners. Cooling is handled by a thermostatically controlled dual-circuit system. Displacement is 4.2 litres (bore x stroke: 105 x 120 mm), rated engine speed is 2,400 rpm. Maximum torque was initially 275 Nm at 1,498 rpm.
From 1989 the turbocharged MWM TD 226 B-4 was used (rated speed 2,250 rpm, 26% torque increase). Power rose from 78 hp (1980) to 82 hp in 1989 and further to 86 hp (approx. 63 kW) in 1991. Maximum torque increased from 321 Nm at 1,550 rpm (1989) to 337 Nm at 1,550 rpm (1991). From approximately the 1989 model year, wet cylinder liners were used.
The 308 LS and 308 LSA were delivered with a fully synchronised gearbox. The first generation had 15 forward and 4 reverse gears (15/4), with two overdrive speeds for 25/30 or 30/40 km/h. In 1984 this became a 21/6 gearbox, followed in 1991 by the optional 21/21 reverser transmission. Top speed is 30 km/h as standard, with an optional 40 km/h version. Shifting is handled via a Voith fluid coupling type 358 TD-F (from 1989: 360 TD-F2, from 1990: 360 TD-F1) and a Fichtel & Sachs single-disc dry clutch type GT NX 310 (from 1984: GTF 320 N or GTF 320 N-295).
The front axle of the LSA is a load-switchable ZF oscillating axle type APL-1552 (from 1984: APL-335, from 1989: APL-735, from 1990: APL-700 F3), with a lateral driveshaft and self-locking "Locomatik" differential.
The hydraulic system is a Fendt block-type control hydraulic with mechanical lift control (MHR) and top link sensing. The three-point linkage is category II, available on request with a quick coupler. A single-acting working cylinder with an 86 mm bore and 137.4 mm stroke is fitted as standard; optionally two additional working cylinders with a 45 mm bore and 181 mm stroke.
The PTO is switchable to 540, 750 and 1,000 rpm. A ground-speed PTO is available on request (9.6 PTO revolutions per wheel revolution). Maximum permissible torque: 1,750 Nm at 540 rpm, 1,100 Nm at 750 rpm and 900 Nm at 1,000 rpm. From 1991, front and rear axle are electrohydraulically switchable.
Standard tyre sizes are 13.6R24 front and 16.9R34 rear. The parking brake is an internal shoe brake on the differential output shafts. A single- or dual-circuit compressed air braking system was available as an option. At 40 km/h, drum brakes in the front wheels are mandatory; at 30 km/h they are optional.
The tractor comes with a sound-insulated comfort cab with a noise level of 73.5 dB(A), an air-suspended seat, tinted glass, adjustable front, side and rear windows and an opening roof hatch. Standard equipment includes heating with a three-speed blower, interior lighting, a radio pre-installation with two speakers, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, digital instruments and rear work lights. Optional extras include air conditioning (later versions), front work lights, particulate filter and H4 supplementary front lighting.
The 308 LS was built in the following series: T 178.010 (1980-1984, 2,633 units), T 178.011 (1984-1988, 596 units), T 178.050 (1989, 37 units), T 178.060 (1989-1990, 73 units), T 178.061 (1990-1991, 50 units), T 178.062/063/064 (1991-1993, 14/24/28 units) and T 178.065 (1993-1998, 206 units). The 308 LSA ran from T 178.210 (1980-1984, 5,498 units) and T 178.211 (1984-1988, 2,964 units) through to T 178.265 (1993-1998, 2,263 units).
