Introduced in 1993 as part of Fendt's updated Farmer 300 series, the 309 (Typ 309) was built through to 2000. The Typ 309 designation separates it from the older 309 LSA (Typ 186), which stayed in production alongside it for a period. Four-wheel drive was the only available configuration. Compared to its predecessor, the tractor came with a redesigned cab offering a lower interior noise level of 72 dB, improved ventilation, and easier access. A higher injection pressure brought fuel consumption down by around 3%, and the oil change interval was set at 500 operating hours.
Power comes from an MWM TD 226 B-4, a water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke turbocharged diesel with direct injection. Displacement is 4,155 cc, with a bore of 105 mm and a stroke of 120 mm. Output is 95 hp (70.8 kW) at 2,350 rpm, with a maximum torque of 375 Nm at 1,500 rpm. Fuel tank capacity is 107 litres.

The standard gearbox is a fully synchronized 21/21 unit with electro-hydraulic reverser (EHS). A 21/6 version was available as an option, as was a super-creeper gearbox. Top speed is 40 km/h. The front and rear differential locks are both electro-hydraulically operated.
Hydraulic pump output is 74.9 litres per minute. Rear lift capacity at the three-point hitch is 4,957 kg. Standard equipment includes one single-acting and one double-acting control valve. A front hydraulic system was available as an option.
The rear PTO is independent and electro-hydraulically engaged, running at 540, 750, or 1,000 rpm. An optional front PTO at 1,000 rpm was also available, independent and electro-hydraulically operated.
Standard front tyres are 380/70 R24, rear 480/70 R34. A wide range of optional tyre sizes was available, including 420/70 R24 front with 520/70 R34 or 480/70 R38 rear.
The 309 (Typ 309) came standard with an air-conditioned cab. Interior noise level was 72 dB. Optional extras included a front loader, front hydraulics, air brake system, additional control valves, and extra lighting.
