Fendt Favorit 612 (Typ 383) specifications

The Fendt Favorit 612 LSA carries the internal type designation T 383 and was built from 1983 to 1993. Within the Favorit 600 series, the 612 occupies a particular position: it was the only model that had been delivered exclusively with four-wheel drive since its introduction in 1968. A rear-wheel drive version only became available in 1974, but the LSA series under Typ 383 was always built exclusively with four-wheel drive. The LS version with rear-wheel drive falls under Typ FWA 283.

There are two production phases. The first (chassis number T 383.210, 1983 to 1987) covers 1,448 units with 135 hp. The second phase (chassis number T 383.211, 1988 to 1993) covers 1,589 units with 145 hp. In 1987, Fendt introduced the Duospeed drive system and the electronically controlled differential lock on the revised 612 LSA. An optional on-board computer was available for processing and storing operational data.

Engine

The Favorit 612 LSA is powered by an MWM TD 226-6.2, a water-cooled six-cylinder four-stroke inline turbodiesel engine with direct injection. The engine is fitted with Rotocap valves, ring carrier pistons, piston crown cooling, a dry air filter with pre-cleaner, an inline injection pump with governor, a multi-hole injector, an oil cooler, a seven-bearing crankshaft, a gear-driven camshaft, a viscous fan, an exhaust turbocharger with pulse charging and thermostatically controlled dual-circuit cooling. Displacement is 6,234 cc in the first phase and 6,240 cc in the second phase.

In the first production phase (1983 to 1987), the engine produces 135 hp. In the second phase (1988 to 1993), output was increased to 145 hp. The torque converter increases torque by up to 30 percent. The lock-up clutch connects engine and gearbox depending on load at 1,600 to 1,900 rpm, reducing or eliminating the need to change gear under load.

Transmission and travel speed

The 612 LSA is fitted with a helical-cut ZF synchronised fine-step gearbox type T 3450 with side-mounted gear selection. The change gearbox has six normal gears and four creep gears. The fine-step section has three positions: slow, fast and reverse. In reverse, sixth gear is locked out. Top speed is 40 km/h in the standard version. There was also an extremely rare 50 km/h version with a modified final drive, achieving approximately 45 km/h in practice. From 1987, the Duospeed gearbox was available, enabling a continuously variable drive range with four power levels.

The main gearbox has four pre-selectable speed ranges: first range 0 to 5.2 km/h, second range 0 to 8.2 km/h, third range 0 to 12.8 km/h and fourth range 0 to 19.4 km/h.

Hydraulics and lift system

The hydraulic tandem pump delivers 72 litres per minute. Maximum lift capacity of the rear three-point hitch is 6,000 kg. The permissible front axle load is 4,000 kg and the rear axle load 6,000 kg.

Power take-off

The PTO is switchable between 540 and 1,000 rpm. An optional front PTO is available.

Brakes, drive and steering

The braking system consists of hydraulically operated full disc brakes on the rear wheels, usable as individual wheel brakes. A propshaft brake acting as a disc brake operates on the four-wheel drive. When the individual wheel brake is applied, the front wheel brake disengages automatically. The parking brake is mechanically operated as an internal shoe brake. The front planetary oscillating axle has an oscillation angle of up to 12 degrees. The rear axle features an electronically controlled differential lock that can be engaged automatically. Steering is hydrostatically assisted.

Difference from the 612 LS (Typ 283)

A point that regularly comes up is the difference between Typ 383 and Typ 283. The Typ 283 is the LS series with rear-wheel drive and a ZF T 3445 gearbox. The Typ 383 has four-wheel drive as standard, a slightly differently configured ZF T 3450 gearbox, a higher hydraulic pump output and higher permissible axle loads. In addition, the Typ 383 received the Duospeed drive system and the electronically controlled differential lock in its second phase, which the Typ 283 does not have.
