Working on a Ford 5640? This page has more than 160 matching parts for this 40 series tractor, with electrics, lighting and trailer couplings up front.
Does the front of your Ford 5640 wander on the road, or do you keep correcting the wheel to hold a straight line? The cause is often in the ball joints or axial joints. This page covers more than 160 parts that fit the 5640, from steering joints to starter motors, made by GRANIT and by brands such as MAHLE, Eaton, Cobo and LUK.
For the steering there are ball joints and axial joints. To find play, jack up the front axle and rock the wheel at front and rear while someone else watches the joints. Always fit a new ball joint with a new nut and split pin, seat the taper clean and dry in the arm, and tighten the nut before you fit the split pin. Have the toe-in reset afterwards, otherwise the front tyres will wear unevenly. Inner plates for the front axle are listed on this page too.
A tank cap looks like a minor part, but it can cause real trouble. If the breather is blocked, the lift pump pulls a vacuum in the tank and the engine dies under heavy load. If the seal is worn, dirt and water find their way into the diesel. Either way, a new cap sorts it out quickly.
For the cab and bodywork there are rear window gas struts, mirrors, indicator and position lights, and hand brake cables. At the rear you will find drawbars. A hand brake cable that has gone stiff is best replaced straight away rather than freed off with penetrating oil, so the brake still holds on a slope.
The type plate on the 5640 and the reference number on the old part are your best guide. With ball joints, also check the thread direction and the taper, because left and right joints look very much alike. Ford placed the 5640 in its 40 series. The Ford 8240 from the same series has its own page with the parts that fit that model, which is useful if you look after both tractors. Looking after a different Ford tractor? Start from Ford parts.
