With a tractor like that, it all comes down to the parts that wear: seals, the clutch, the steering and the starting system. For the engine there are sealing rings for the injection nozzles, exhaust gaskets and water pump gaskets. You will also find engine oil filters, V-belts and turbochargers. A tank cap looks like a minor item, but one that no longer seals lets dirt and moisture into the diesel, and the injectors pay for that later.
Whenever you pull an injector, always renew the sealing washer underneath it. A used washer has been crushed and no longer seals properly, which leads to blow-by and soot building up around the nozzle. Clean the seat thoroughly before the new washer goes in.
Fitting a turbocharger is a job where cleanliness counts. Flush or replace the oil feed line, change the engine oil and filter, and prime the new turbo with a little clean oil before the first start. Let the engine idle for a while before you open the throttle.
The driveline is covered with clutch plates, universal joints and bushes for the transmission housing. If the clutch slips under load or will not disengage cleanly, the plate is usually worn. While it is apart, inspect the flywheel face and the release bearing as well.
The front axle of a 6810 takes a beating in the yard and in the field. Axial joints and ball joints take the play out of the steering. After replacing an axial joint or a ball joint, reset the toe-in, otherwise the front tyres wear unevenly. At the back there are drawbars, and for the driver there are seats.
Locate the data plate and compare the reference number on the old part with the details on the product. On many parts for these tractors, a wire brush will make a worn number readable again.
