The engine side covers thermostats, alternators and gear reduction starters, plus an aircon compressor for the cab. When a starter turns slowly, check the battery and the earth strap first. A corroded earth connection behaves just like a worn starter and costs far less to put right.
Lamps and reflectors take the odd knock from a branch or a post. Replace cracked glass promptly, as moisture getting in corrodes the reflector and the bulb holder.
For trailers with air brakes there are connector heads and air dryer cartridges, including Wabco. Renew the dryer cartridge at fixed intervals even when nothing seems wrong. A saturated cartridge lets moisture into lines and valves, which means frozen valves in winter and corrosion the rest of the year. Ball joints for the steering and gas struts for the door or hood complete the page.
A thermostat that sticks either keeps the engine from warming up or lets it overheat, so replace it at the first sign of either, and fit a new gasket with it every time. Ball joints with a split rubber boot are best replaced straight away, since water and grit destroy the joint from inside. If the alternator stops charging, check the drive belt before anything else, because a slipping belt makes a healthy alternator look dead. When fitting a new alternator, make sure the flange and connections match the old one.
The type plate should read 211 F Vario. For headlights, check the side and the mounting dimensions, and for ball joints the taper and thread. For anything else, the reference number on the old part is the quickest way to confirm a match.
