Check the drawbar while you grease it

An automatic hitch that no longer locks properly is a real hazard on the road. When you grease it, look at whether the jaw and the pin have worn, and whether the latch drops fully and audibly into place. If there is noticeable play or the hook sticks, replacing it beats any amount of adjustment. Keep the guide greased afterwards, particularly after weeks of mud or slurry.

The hydraulic top link deserves the same attention. Its chromed piston rod is the vulnerable part. A scratch or patch of rust on it slowly chews through the seal in the cylinder, and sooner or later oil runs down the rod. Retract the top link as far as it will go after work so less chrome is left exposed to weather and dirt, and when hitching up, check that the hoses are not rubbing anywhere.
