The Fendt Favorit 509 C is the entry-level model of the Favorit 500C series, which Fendt introduced in the autumn of 1993. The names Favorit 509 (Typ 509) and Favorit 509C (Typ 509) refer to the same model. The tractor was built from 1994 to 2000, with a total of 1,490 units produced during that period. Despite being the smallest model in the series, its technical specification closely matched that of the much heavier Fendt 800 series. The 509 C was designed as a versatile tractor suitable for ploughing, harvesting, loading and transport work.
Under the hood sits an MWM four-cylinder turbodiesel, type TD 226 B-4, with a displacement of 4,156 cc. Engine output is 95 hp (70.8 kW) at 2,100 rpm. Maximum torque is 381 Nm at 1,500 rpm. Fuel delivery is handled by a Bosch VE distributor pump with automatic advance and multi-hole injectors. Maximum injection pressure is 850 bar. Further features include overhead valves, pressure lubrication, piston crown cooling and a gear-driven camshaft. Cooling is handled by a thermostatically controlled dual-circuit system with a viscous fan coupling and exhaust turbocharger. The constant power range runs between 1,900 and 2,400 rpm, and an oil change is only required after 500 operating hours. The fuel tank holds 135 litres.
The 509 C uses a ZF 7200 Turboshift gearbox, a fully synchronised unit with four-speed powershift and electro-hydraulic reverser operated by a single lever. The gearbox offers 44 forward and 44 reverse gears, consisting of 24 working gears and 20 creep gears. A notable feature is the Voith fluid coupling (type 390 TD-F), positioned ahead of the wet multi-disc clutch. This hydraulic coupling smooths out power delivery and protects the drivetrain from shock loads. Direction changes can be made without depressing the clutch, thanks to the synchronised reverser with preselect function. Standard top speed is 40 km/h, with an optional increase to 50 km/h.
The operating weight of the tractor is 4,970 kg. Wheelbase is 233 cm. Standard tyre sizes are 420/70R24 front and 480/70R38 rear, though 18.4 R38 rear was also used. The electrical system runs on 12 volts with a 110 Ah battery and alternator charging.
The cab of the 509 C was at launch nearly identical to that of the Farmer 300 series, with a noise level of 72 dB(A). In 1995 the cab comfort was upgraded. Heating was standard, air conditioning was optional. The cab was fitted with a sprung suspension mounting.
