An automatic hitch only closes reliably if the coupling pin and its catch are clean and move easily. Grease the pin and the mechanism regularly, and check the jaw for wear on the side that takes the pull. A pin with a stepped or oval wear mark should be replaced, because it can let the trailer eye ride up. After each hitching, check visually that the pin has dropped fully and the safety catch is engaged.
