A slow crank is not always the starter

When the engine turns over sluggishly on a cold morning, measure the battery voltage first and inspect the earth strap between engine block and frame. A corroded earth connection behaves just like a worn starter and costs a few minutes with a wire brush to fix. If the starter really has had its day, you can choose between a conventional unit and a gear reduction starter, which drives the pinion through a small internal reduction gear and is more compact as a result. Whichever you pick, match the number of pinion teeth and the direction of rotation to your old one before ordering.
