Choose from more than 350 parts for the Massey Ferguson 398 from the 300 series. Lighting, electrics and parts for the brakes and transmission lead the range.
If the linkage on your 398 creeps down while an implement should be staying up, oil is getting past a seal somewhere. For this Massey Ferguson from the 300 series, this page lists more than 350 replacement parts from GRANIT, Eaton, Cobo, DANA Spicer and MAHLE.
For the lift there are sealing rings for the lift cylinder, seals for the lift arm shaft, gear wheels for the linkage, thrust washers and adjusting plates. A sinking linkage often points to a worn piston seal in the lift cylinder. Replace all the cylinder sealing rings in one go and inspect the bore for scoring or pitting, because a new ring on a damaged wall will not last. Coat the new rings in clean hydraulic oil before fitting so they do not get nicked as they slide in.
Alternators and starter motors cover charging and starting. If the battery is not charging well, check the V-belt before blaming the alternator. A slipping belt makes the alternator turn too slowly, and the charging voltage drops. V-belts are on this page as well.
You will also find exhaust gaskets, O-rings for the axle housing, ball joints, bolts, mirrors and door gas struts. For broken cab glass there is a repair set with sealant and primer. Apply the primer to both the glass and the frame and give it enough time to flash off before the sealant goes on, otherwise the glass will not bond properly.
A leaking exhaust gasket is hard to hear at first, but it leaves soot around the flange. Replace it as soon as you spot that, and tighten the manifold nuts evenly so the flange does not distort. Bolts you undo along the way are often rusted solid, so use penetrating oil and give it time before applying force. On ball joints, check the dust boot as well, since a tear lets dirt in and the joint soon wears out.
Check the type plate to confirm it is a 398 and compare the reference number on the old part, especially with seals that look almost the same from the outside. In the Massey Ferguson 300 series, the Massey Ferguson 390, 375, 399, 390T and 350 also have a page of their own, so for each of those tractors you only see what fits. Other models from the brand are reachable via Massey Ferguson parts.
