On a busy MF 5435 the engine block is rarely the problem. It is far more often a rocker switch on the dash, a dead work lamp or a gas strut that can no longer hold the rear window open. Inside the cab you will find rocker switches, such as the rear work light switch with an illumination indicator, and contact switches. There are mirrors, gas struts and complete tractor seats, plus the sealing ring for the rear window lock. For lighting there are work lamps in spot and flood versions, and under the bonnet there are alternators, an aircon compressor and a fan clutch. If one lamp keeps failing, check the earth connection and the plug before fitting another, since a corroded earth will make even a new lamp flicker.
If the air conditioning only blows warm and the compressor has failed, replace the receiver drier at the same time. Then have the system evacuated and recharged with the correct amount of refrigerant and oil. Moisture or debris left over from the old compressor will otherwise shorten the life of the new one.
The PTO clutch is covered with internal and external plates. At the rear there are rail-mounted drawbars, and for the powershift and hydraulics a good spread of O-rings, sealing rings and seals.
To be certain of the fit, start with the type plate and any reference number on the old part. With electrical parts, compare the connector, as two switches that look the same can be wired differently. For an alternator check the flange and pulley, and for clutch plates the teeth on the inside or outside. When the PTO clutch plates are due, replace the complete pack in one go and let the new plates soak in clean oil before assembly so the clutch engages smoothly from the start.
