The 6490 engages its PTO through a wet multi plate clutch. Internal and external plates sit alternately in the pack and wear together, so replace them as a set rather than only the plate that looks worn. Soak the new plates in clean transmission oil for a while before fitting, so the friction material is saturated before the clutch sees pressure for the first time. Replace the piston O-rings at the same time, because they are easily nicked when the housing is opened.
A good share of the faults on this tractor are electrical. You will find rocker switches and push button switches for the dash, relays, speed sensors and an alternator. Work lamps, including HELLA units, light up the area around the tractor at night, and mirrors keep the traffic behind you in view. When a rocker switch plays up, check the connector on the back for green corrosion before you replace the switch itself.
At the rear there are automatic drawbars and adapter plates for putting a different coupling into the rail. In the cab, gas struts hold the door and rear window open, while sealing rings and seals are used at the rear window lock and the fuel tank sender.
A gas strut that no longer holds is a safety issue on this tractor. A rear window that drops without warning will catch a head or a hand. Replace struts as a pair even if only one feels weak, and fit them with the piston rod pointing down. That keeps the seal inside the cylinder lubricated and the new strut lasts longer. In cold weather struts push noticeably less, which is normal.
The type plate shows the model and serial number. For clutch plates, sensors and relays, the reference number on the old part is the quickest way to the matching item, so compare it with the product description before ordering.
