Fuel filters are part of routine servicing. After changing one, bleed the fuel system with the hand primer until only clear diesel without bubbles comes out of the bleed screw. Skip that step and the engine will stall as soon as the trapped air reaches the injectors.
For the cooling system there are radiator hoses and thermostats. If a hose has gone hard or shows fine cracks at the clamp, replace it before it splits on a hot day, and use a new clamp, since old clamps often lose their tension. For an engine rebuild you will find piston ring sets and a valve cover gasket.
Clutch plates for the Steyr 540 are listed here along with a hydraulic pump, single-acting hydraulic parts and seal kits, plus a bolt set for the second control valve. When replacing the clutch, count the splines in the hub of the old plate and compare the outside diameter, so the new plate is right first time. Prime a new hydraulic pump with clean oil before fitting it, so it never runs dry on start-up.
The exhaust is covered by a vertical silencer and the matching exhaust gasket, which you should always renew whenever the silencer comes off. If the manifold nuts are seized, soak them in penetrating oil the day before and nip them up slightly before undoing them. That way you are far less likely to snap a stud in the head. An alternator, pins and window rubbers for the cab also fit the 540.
The serial plate confirms that you have a 540 rather than a 545 or 548. Then use the reference number on the old part. On a clutch plate it is often on the hub, on a filter on the outside of the canister, and on a hydraulic pump on the plate fixed to the pump body.
