Massey Ferguson 8240 parts for the PTO clutch, cab and hitch

A slipping PTO is one of the classic jobs on a Massey Ferguson 8240, which is why inner and outer plates for the PTO clutch sit on this page next to more than 350 other parts that fit this tractor. They come from GRANIT and from makers such as Scharmüller, Cobo, HELLA and GRAMMER, and cover the engine bay, the cab, lighting and the rear hitch.

What you can fit to an 8240

  • Driveline and engine: PTO clutch plates, starter motors, thermostats and O-rings, for example for the feed pump.
  • Sealing: seals and sealing rings, such as a seal for the tank sensor and a sealing ring for the rear window lock.
  • Cab: gas struts for the rear window, mirrors, tractor seats, contact switches and push buttons.
  • Lighting: work lamps from HELLA and others, including a square built-in spotlight.
  • Hitching: drawbars for the hitch rail and bushes for the split pin lock.

Rebuilding the PTO clutch properly

Once the clutch housing is open, replace the inner and outer plates as a full pack. Fitting a fresh friction plate against a worn, heat-blued steel plate means it runs hot again and the PTO starts slipping under heavy load. Lay every steel plate on a flat bench and check that it sits true. While you are in there, renew the O-rings and sealing rings in that area too, so a small weep does not send you back into the housing a month later.

If the engine does not crank when you turn the key, do not condemn the starter straight away. A worn contact switch gives exactly the same symptoms. With a multimeter, check whether voltage reaches the starter signal wire with the key in the start position. If nothing arrives, the fault lies in the switch or the wiring and the starter can stay where it is. The two gas struts on the rear window age at the same rate, so change them as a pair. A single new strut pushes the glass open unevenly and strains the hinges. When fitting a new HELLA work lamp, look at the plug as well and protect the pins with a little contact grease.

Matching the part to your tractor

The type plate on the tractor tells you exactly which 8240 you are working on. For a thermostat, starter or switch, your best clue is the number stamped on or stuck to the old part. Compare it with the product details on this page. For clutch plates, measure the thickness and the inner and outer size of the old plate with a caliper before ordering.

Other tractors in the 8200 series

If the 8240 shares the yard with another model from the same series, order through that tractor's own page so you only see the parts recorded for it:

Every other model page for the brand is gathered on Massey Ferguson parts.
