The Case IH 4240, also known as the IHC 4240, comes with more than 300 parts on this page, including lighting, trailer couplings and electrics.
Plenty of farmers still call it the IHC 4240, while the bonnet says Case IH. It is the same tractor, and this page brings together more than 300 parts that fit it. We start with the steering, since play at the wheel is a familiar complaint on tractors of this age.
For the steering there are ball joints and axial joints. The axial joint sits in the track rod at the front axle, and the ball joint at the outer end by the steering knuckle. Between them they decide whether the tractor tracks straight or wanders.
Steering tip: have someone rock the steering wheel back and forth while you watch the front wheels. If a joint moves in its housing before the wheel follows, it is worn. After fitting new joints, reset the toe-in, or the front tyres will wear unevenly in no time.
On the engine side you will find O-rings for the feed pump, a thermostat gasket, bushes for the nozzle holders, sealing rings, pistons and radiator hoses. The thermostat gasket carries reference number 74702038, and that kind of number is exactly what to look for on the old gasket or in your parts book. A tank cap is here too, one of those small parts nobody misses until it goes missing in a field.
The electrical side has changeover relays and a rocker switch for the front PTO that mounts in the dashboard. Flood beam work lamps and mirrors take care of light and vision. A gas strut for the door and individual control symbols complete the set.
The makers are GRANIT, HELLA, Walterscheid, Carraro and FEBI.
If a work lamp or the front PTO will not switch on, check the relay and switch before digging into the wiring. A changeover relay is quickly tested by plugging a known good one into the socket. If it clicks and everything works again, you have your answer. When one radiator hose needs replacing, check the others as well, since they are all the same age.
The type plate confirms you have a 4240, whether it reads IHC or Case IH. For engine parts such as pistons and gaskets, the number on the old part counts as well. With ball joints, check the thread and the taper, since both have to suit the steering arm.
