The Case IH 485, also known as IHC 485, is covered here with more than 200 items, from steering and front axle parts to vintage parts, brakes and transmission.
The Case IH 485, still known to many as the IHC 485, is a tractor that tends to be repaired rather than replaced. It belongs to the 85 series, and this page has more than 200 parts for it from GRANIT, ZF, HELLA, LUK and VICTOR REINZ. A good number are gaskets and seals, which is what you need once the engine or hydraulics come apart.
The glass bowl on the fuel pre-filter is worth a look at every service. If water or dirt has settled at the bottom, drain it before it reaches the pump. Refit the bowl with a new seal and bleed the line. When you replace a radiator hose, renew rusty clamps too, because a new hose under an old clamp will still weep.
For the clutch there are clutch plates from LUK. Steering is covered by ball joints, the three point linkage by complete lifting spindles and pivot pins. You will also find bushes, hydraulic pump seals and HELLA flasher units.
Play in a ball joint shows up as vague steering. Have someone rock the steering wheel back and forth while you watch the joints, and the worn one will give itself away.
Set a new lifting spindle to length once it is fitted. Turn both spindles until the lower links sit at the same height, or the implement will hang crooked. Grease the thread, because a seized spindle is very hard to adjust later. Pivot pins and bushes in the linkage are best renewed together, as a new pin in a worn bush soon has play again.
An upper head gasket set with valve stem seals is meant for anyone taking the head off. Have the head checked for flatness while it is off and always fit the new stem seals. Worn seals let oil run down the valve stems, which shows as blue smoke on a cold start.
On a tractor of this age the type plate is sometimes hard to read. The reference number on the old part then helps, stamped into a casting or printed on a gasket. For lifting spindles and ball joints, measure the length and thread of the old one.
