Keep the Case IH 640, known to many as the IHC 640, on the move. This page has over 250 items, from lighting and trailer couplings to classic tractor parts.
Plenty of farmers still know it as the IHC 640. Whichever name you use, there are more than 250 replacement parts for this tractor from GRANIT, HELLA, Scharmüller, LUK and FEBI.
The clutch side covers double clutches, clutch plates and complete clutch kits. With the kits, pay attention to flywheel depth. Flywheels come in different depths, and a kit meant for a flat flywheel will not work in a deep one. Measure yours before ordering, or copy the number from the old pressure plate.
Worn ball joints show up as wandering on the road. Set the front wheels straight, have someone rock the steering wheel back and forth and hold each joint in turn. Any movement you can feel means that joint is due for replacement.
A steering valve that leaks or no longer centres the steering cleanly makes long days in the field tiring. Check that the oil is clean and the filter has been changed first, since dirt in the valve produces the same symptoms as wear.
For the electrical system there are alternators and rocker switches. Lighting is covered by headlights and replacement lenses for the indicator and position lights. At the rear you can renew the drawbar, and for the windscreen frame there is a shock absorber.
If the charge warning light stays on with the engine running, check belt tension and the terminals on the alternator first. A loose or corroded cable lug gives exactly the same symptoms as a worn alternator. Put a multimeter across the battery terminals: with the engine running the voltage should be clearly higher than with it stopped. If it is not, the alternator is the likely culprit. Old headlights that have gone dull rarely come back with polishing, since both glass and reflector have suffered over the years. A rocker switch that feels warm has burnt contacts and should be replaced before the wiring behind it suffers too.
The type plate tells you the model and serial number. The quickest route, though, is the number on the old part, which on IHC components is often stamped straight into the metal. Enter that reference number in the shop and the matching replacement comes up. Related Case IH tractors have pages of their own:
