Taking the engine apart calls for more than a cylinder head gasket set. You will also find individual gaskets, such as the one for the camshaft cover, connecting rod bearings, engine O-rings and seals for the fuel pump. If the cooling system is already drained, fitting a new water pump at the same time adds very little labour.
When the IHC is split to replace the clutch plate, change the rear crankshaft seal and the thrust bearing while you are in there. Both are easy to reach at that point. A seal that starts weeping shortly afterwards will soak the new plate in oil, the clutch begins to slip, and the whole job has to be done twice. When fitting the head gasket, clean the faces of block and head thoroughly without scratching them and check the head for distortion with a straight edge. Tighten the head bolts in the correct sequence and in stages, then recheck them after the first hours of running so the new gasket can settle properly.
Wander in the steering on an older 654 often comes from worn ball joints on the steering rod, and replacements are listed here. There are sealing rings for the brake housing to keep oil away from the brakes. For road work you can fit new headlights with dipped and main beam, HELLA indicator and position lights and a flasher unit. If the indicators suddenly flash too fast, check for a blown bulb before blaming the flasher unit. Rear fenders complete the bodywork side.
Check the type plate to confirm you have a 654 and not a close relative with a different number. Many old components carry a stamped or cast reference number. Compare it with the number shown with the product, and make sure the 654 is mentioned on the item. For bearings and seals, the part you remove is usually the best guide.
