Keep your John Deere 4240 working with more than 170 parts selected for this model, from lighting and trailer couplings to steering and front axle parts.
When a John Deere 4240 is hard to start or cuts out mid-job, the fuel supply is often to blame, which is why this page starts there. In total there are more than 170 parts for the 4240, from brands such as GRANIT, HELLA, GRAMMER, VICTOR REINZ and BOSCH.
On the fuel side there are feed pumps, feed pump seals, tank caps and stop cables. A vented tank cap that blocks up creates a vacuum in the tank, and the engine starts to lose power after a while. If you suspect it, loosen the cap briefly with the engine running. If it picks up again, you have your answer. An engine that will not shut off cleanly usually means a rusty stop cable or a kinked outer sleeve. For the engine itself there are gaskets, for example for the manifold and silencer, as well as sealing rings, O-rings and thermostats.
The feed pump draws diesel from the tank. After replacing it, bleed the system at the filter until fuel without air bubbles comes out.
The cab parts for the 4240 include tractor seats, among them air suspended GRAMMER seats. For lighting and signalling there are headlights, brake light switches, flasher units and relays. If the indicators flash too fast, a blown bulb is the likely cause rather than the flasher unit. Up front there are track rods for the steering, and at the back there are drawbars.
An air suspended seat has its own compressor drawing power from the tractor. If the suspension stops working, check the fuse and plug before taking the seat apart. With HELLA headlights, a misted lens usually means a failed seal, and moisture left inside soon dulls the reflector. The brake light switch sits by the brake pedal and can end up out of adjustment after the brakes have been set up, so check the brake lights after any brake work. The track rods set the alignment of the front wheels, and after replacing them the toe-in needs measuring again or the tyres will wear unevenly.
The 4240 belongs to the John Deere 40 series. The type plate confirms which model you have. After that, compare the number on the old part with the reference number shown for the product, particularly with VICTOR REINZ gaskets, which often carry their number printed on the edge.
If you run more machines from the 40 series, each model has its own page of matching parts:
