Keep a John Deere 1640 from the 40 series in work with more than 400 parts. From lighting and electrics to engine parts, everything is selected for this model.
A John Deere 1640 that is still earning its keep needs attention in three areas after all these years, the electrics, the three-point linkage and the seals. This page holds more than 400 John Deere 1640 parts, from makers such as GRANIT, HELLA, GRAMMER, MAHLE and LUK.
If the charge light stays on with the engine running, or the starter turns the engine over only slowly, look at the alternators, starter motors and relays. Before swapping an alternator, check the V-belt. A glazed or slack belt slips on the pulley, and then even a healthy alternator will undercharge. With a sluggish starter, look at the battery terminals and the earth strap to the engine block first. Corrosion on a terminal costs more cranking power than you would expect.
For the hydraulic lift there are bushes for the lower link strut and gaskets for the lift housing. A worn bush lets the arms move about, so an implement ends up hanging crooked behind the tractor. For the clutch there are internal plates, and for the front axle track rods and ball joints. If the steering rattles on a rough lane, check both joints on the track rod before you replace one.
An older 1640 often gives itself away with an oil patch underneath. For that there are seals, for example for the feed pump, O-rings, including one for the master brake cylinder, and sealing rings in many sizes. Radiator hoses and other hoses are here too. Squeeze a hose when the engine is cold. If it feels hard or spongy, or you can see fine cracks by the clamp, replace it now rather than later and fit new clamps at the same time.
For the cab there are air suspended tractor seats, and for the tank lockable caps with a vent.
The 1640 belongs to the John Deere 40 series. Within that range many wear parts are specific to each model, so check every item to see whether the 1640 is listed. The type plate on the tractor confirms the model, and the old part often gives extra certainty. Alternators, starters and gaskets frequently carry a stamped or printed reference number. Match it with the number shown on the item and you can be sure it fits.
If you also run other tractors from the 40 series, these pages will help: John Deere 2040S, John Deere 3640, John Deere 4040, John Deere 4240 and John Deere 4440. For every other model from the brand, head to John Deere parts.
