When you replace a valve cover gasket, preparation is everything. Clean the faces of the head and cover until no oil remains on them, skip any extra sealant on a gasket that is not designed for it, and tighten the bolts evenly in a cross pattern. Overtightening bends the cover and it will leak again.
If the starter turns slowly or only clicks, check the battery voltage first, then the heavy cables to the starter and the earth strap to the engine block. A corroded connection costs more cranking power on a cold morning than you might expect. If all of that is sound and it still only clicks, the starter or its solenoid has worn out and replacement is the fix.
