Head gaskets for these engines come in more than one thickness, and the right one depends on how far the pistons stand proud of the block. Check the old gasket for its marking, usually holes or notches, and use the same thickness unless the block, pistons or crankshaft have been machined. In that case, measure piston protrusion again. Replace stretch bolts and follow the tightening sequence from the engine maker. Check the head and block for distortion with a straight edge before the new gasket goes on.
Fitting a new clutch plate is the moment to renew the release bearing too and to inspect the flywheel for scoring and blue heat marks. After changing a fuel filter, bleed the system with the hand primer until no more air bubbles appear, otherwise the engine will be reluctant to start.
A gear reduction starter uses a small, fast spinning motor behind a reduction gear, so it delivers plenty of torque and turns the engine over briskly even on a cold morning. When swapping, compare the mounting and the position of the terminals with your old starter. If a lamp glass has cracked, replace just the glass. That keeps moisture away from the reflector and saves buying a complete lamp.
