Also known as the Valmet 405, the Valtra 405 has more than 70 parts on this page, including lighting, engine parts and items for brakes and transmission.
Many examples of this tractor still carry the Valmet 405 name on the bonnet. More than 70 parts on this page fit it, from GRANIT, LUK, MANN-FILTER, MAHLE, Fleetguard and others.
For the cooling circuit there are thermostats, radiator hoses and a radiator filler cap. The cap is easy to overlook. Its seal keeps the system under pressure, and when it wears the coolant boils sooner and water slowly disappears without any visible leak. Replace it along with the thermostat or a hose, and never open it on a hot engine.
A thrust bearing that sings or squeals as soon as you press the clutch pedal is due for replacement. Since the tractor has to be split for that job, it pays to look at the clutch and the seals at the same time. A leaking crankshaft seal sends oil down past the pulley. If the shaft has worn a groove where the old seal ran, press the new one in slightly deeper so its lip runs on a clean surface.
An alternator, a flasher unit with holder, work lamps and indicator position lights keep the 405 charged and visible. Door locks are available for the cab, and ball joints for the steering.
A worn ball joint shows up as vague, wandering steering. Have someone rock the wheel while you watch the joint, and if the ball moves in its housing it needs replacing. Extra work lamps are a simple way to give an older tractor better light for feeding or jobs at dusk.
Check the data plate to confirm the tractor is a 405. Some parts are made for a group of Valtra-Valmet models, such as a radiator hose that fits from the 205 up to the 865, while others also fit Massey Ferguson. The product details make this clear. For filters and gaskets, compare the number on the old part. For a ball joint, check whether it is left or right and how many notches it has.
