With a turbocharged engine, air conditioning and a fair amount of cab electrics, the Valtra A 85 has plenty that can wear. More than 100 parts are listed for it here. Rather than going item by item, this page walks round the tractor.
Under the hood there are remanufactured turbochargers, water pumps and valve cover gaskets, plus seals for the exhaust manifold at the turbo. In the fuel system you will find the O-ring for the feed pump. The alternator is made for Valtra-Valmet, as is the aircon compressor with its twin groove pulley.
Whenever you replace the turbo, fit a new manifold seal with it. Inspect the oil feed and return lines as well, because a blocked or kinked line is often what killed the old unit. Prime the new turbo with clean engine oil through the feed port before the first start, and let the engine idle for the first minute.
Inside the cab there are door locks, GRAMMER tractor seats and a flasher unit with holder. Outside you will find work lamps, including a flood beam, and rectangular indicator and position lights. Ball joints for the steering come from DANA Spicer among others.
Drawbar frames and ball type drawbars from Scharmüller and Walterscheid handle the towing side. With a frame, rail width is what counts, as it has to match the guide on your tractor.
Replacing an aircon compressor follows a set order. Have the system recovered by a qualified workshop first, fit a new receiver drier along with the compressor, and flush the lines if the old one failed internally. Metal debris left in the circuit will quickly ruin the new compressor. Check the compressor oil quantity before the system is recharged.
A water pump announces its end with coolant at the weep hole under the shaft or a whining bearing. Fit a new gasket with it, refill with fresh coolant and bleed the system thoroughly.
Check the type plate to be sure you have an A 85. On a turbocharger, aircon compressor or alternator, the part number is usually on a tag or cast into the housing. Compare it with the details of the item and you will know it fits.
